В рамках проведённой научной работы учёные изучили состояние здоровье более чем тысячи человек, чей возраст составлял от 55 до 87 лет. Каждому добровольцу нужно было сдать образцы слюны для анализа и предоставить данные об употреблении алкоголя. Из всех исследуемых 70 человек оказались совсем не пьющими, 614 – умеренно пьющими, а 160 человек выпивали много и постоянно.
Выяснилось, что у пьющих людей были более высокие уровни потенциально опасных бактерий — Actinomyces и Neisseria. А также у них было меньше лактобактерий, позволяющих защититься от болезней. Учёные уверяют, что подобный дисбаланс может привести к развитию заболеваний дёсен, рака полости рта, болезни сердца. Они предполагают, что это может быть связано с тем, какие кислоты присутствуют в алкогольных напитках. За счёт них создаётся благоприятная среда для размножения бактерий. Также причиной риска могут стать накопление вредных побочных продуктов в результате распада алкоголя, в том числе химические вещества.
